![]() LAVENDON is a parish and large village, 3 miles east from Olney, 9½ from Bedford, 12 from Northampton, and 8 from Newport Pagnell, in the hundred, union and county court district of Newport Pagnell, rural deanery of Newport Pagnell, archdeaconry of Buckingham, and diocese of Oxford. The church of St Mary, which was restored in 1859, at a cost of £800, has a nave, aisles, and chancel, with tower and 5 bells, and is in the Saxon style: there are two stained glass windows, one in the east of the chancel, given by Mr. Benjamin S. Brookes, the other given by Mr. H. Coles; the church contains four piscinae. The register dates from the year 1574. The living is a rectory, with Cold Brayfield annexed, joint annual value £284, with residence, in the gift of, and held by, the Rev Gerard William Tomkins, B.A., of Jesus College, Cambridge. The rent of 9 acres of 1869 PO Directory for Lavendon land and three cottages was left by an unknown donor for the repairs of the church. The principal landowners are W. F. Farrer, Esq., C.L. Higgins, Esq., B. S. Brookes, Esq., the Earl of Dartmouth, and Major Chester. The soil is mixed; subsoil, stone and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips.
