These first two articles are published with the kind permission of Professor Richard Britnell, with photo illustrations by Nigel Stickells. They were originally written in 1964 for the local Bucks Standard Newspaper.

Professor Britnell is a former resident of Lavendon. His father was the Headmaster of Lavendon School for some 18 years before retiring in April 1975.

Richard Britnell is currently Emeritus Professor in the Department of History at Durham University and a member of the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies
. He is also a Fellow of the British Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
