LNGR was brought about as a result of a healthy interest in all things railway.

It all began in 1988 with the purchase of a home and distant semaphore signal from Midland Station, Wellingborough. A considerable amount of time was spent gathering information on narrow gauge tracks, rolling stock and locomotives. A lot more time went into the actual planning of the Lavendon Narrow Gauge Railway and eventually in a flurry of activity our railway began to materialise. Our first task was to lay down a length of track. Almost everything was prepared and assembled by hand and finally we had a length of track on which to test our rolling stock which was still to be built.

In 1990, the Wellingborough signalling unit was erected as was a lever frame which had originally been part of the signalling system at Swindon Station.

In 1991, the first part of the track as it is today was laid, a signal box was built and an ornamental pond established. It was around this time that Bernard Maycock arrived with his American steam logging locomotive. The purpose of his visit was to test his locomotive on our track. We are not sure who was taking the biggest risk!! Around this time, a second signal was purchased from Martins Yard at Northampton and was duly erected. Also at this time our first diesel locomotive was on the drawing board.

It was in 1992 that we acquired a number of telegraph poles and these were erected alongside the track and a bridge was built spanning the driveway at No.6 Harrold Road.

1993 saw the purchase of four British Rail (12 ton) vent vans. The track was completed in the autumn and a single platform formed which was the first part of our station. Our first locomotive and three passenger coaches were completed and commissioned. On the run up to Christmas, we operated our first Santa Specials. Decorative lights were erected around the track, one of the vent vans became Santa's Grotto for Santa and his helper and the lounge at No.6 Harrold Road doubled as the station waiting room where both the young and the not so young could partake of Christmas fare whilst waiting for their train ride. All this made for a wonderful Christmas atmosphere.

During 1994, LNGR was invited to apply for listing as an official Narrow Gauge Railway. The organising body came to inspect our 7. 25 inch 1400 foot track, rolling stock and the railway in general and we were pleased to be advised that we qualified for the listing. By now, LNGR was making a significant contribution to our fund raising activities which enabled us to increase our donations to village organisations and other deserving causes.

1995 saw the granny annexe at No.6 Harrold Road converted to a full time waiting room and buffet. In addition we added a second platform to enable trains to be boarded from both sides of the track.

1996 heralded the arrival of the ghost train on Halloween. This become an annual event as has our Santa Specials at Christmas. It was around this time that someone suggested that it might be a good idea to apply for planning permission due to the change of use of outbuildings. Our application was submitted and permission was duly granted.

In 1997 we built three more passenger coaches including one designed to carry disabled persons along with their carers and acquired a steam locomotive name Remus. A second station was built at the top of the garden which was called Twin Oaks (sorry no prizes for guessing why).

In 1999 due to an illness in the family it was necessary to move house to No. 22 Harrold Road and No.6 Harrold Road was put up for sale. This brought about a lot of work as all elements of LNGR had to be removed from the property prior to any sale.

As we run into 2007 LNGR continues to be very popular with children and adults alike. We are always looking at ways of improving our railway and other exhibits and hope to continue to provide an interesting venue for many years to come. Whether you have been to LNGR previously or are making your first visit, you can expect a warm welcome.

LNGR was brought about as a result of a healthy interest in all things railway.

It all began in 1988 with the purchase of a home and distant semaphore signal from Midland Station, Wellingborough. A significant amount of time was spent gathering information by taking photographs of railway stations, locomotives, rolling stock and track. Planning the narrow gauge railway took some time and eventually in a flurry of activity, Lavendon Narrow Gauge Railway began to materialise. Most items were prepared and built by hand and we finally had had our first length of straight track laid down. So at this point we had a test bed on which to test our rolling stock and locomotive which had still to be built.

In 1990, the Wellingborough Signal unit was erected as was a lever frame which had originally been part of the signalling system at Swindon Station.

In 1991, the first substantial part of the track as it is today was laid down, a signal box was built and an ornamental pond established. It was around this time that Bernard Maycock arrived on the scene with his American steam logging locomotive. The purpose of his visit was two fold. to test our track and to test his loco. We are not sure who took the biggest risk. During this period a second signal was purchased from Martin's yard at Northampton and was duly erected. Also at this time, our first diesel was on the drawing board.

During 1994, LNGR was invited to apply for listing as an official "Minor Railway". The organising body arrived to inspect our 7.25" 1400 foot track and advised us that we qualified for registration. By now, LNGR was making a significant contribution to our fund raising activities which enabled us to increase the donations made to village organisations and to other deserving causes in the area.
