Lavendon Old Folks enjoyed a visit to Youlgrave
and Bakewell in Derbyshire on 21 June 2010
organised by the Lavendon Old Peoples Welfare
Committee. At Youlgrave there was an opportunity to see a variety of 'Well Dressing' displays prepared by Youlgrave village residents. A Flower Festival was also being held in the village church. The Lavendon coach party then went on to Bakewell for a look around by the river and in the evening there was a very welcome stop for a meal at The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop. There was a chance for the Folks to make their own Bakewell Pudding which was freshly baked whilst the meal was being eaten. The Gallery below shows some of the highlights of the visit which, because of the high demand, was repeated the following Friday, 25 June, for more of the Old Folks. The origins of well dressing are said to
lie in the tradition of giving thanks for
the purity of the water drawn from certain
wells during the period of the Black Death. Wikipedia tells us that "wooden frames are constructed and covered with clay, mixed with water and salt. A design is sketched on paper, often of a religious theme, and this is traced onto the clay. The picture is then filled in with natural materials, predominantly flower petals and mosses, but also beans, seeds and small cones." Left: Appropriately for Lavendon, a display showing
the Green Man. Below: Miniature displays prepared by the children, ages 5 - 9. The parish church of All Saints in Youlgrave
is especially attractive and provided an
ideal setting for a Flower Festival. Below
are a few of the displays. Joan Panter and Dilys Harrison enjoying their
visit to the Flower Festival. To see what they got up to next, go to Part 2 - Bakewell. Visit by Lavendon Old Folks to Youlgrave
