Subsidy Roll of 1524 for Laundon (Lavendon) and Cold Brayfield*
The listing below shows the names and assessments of the inhabitants of Lavendon and Cold Brayfield who paid the lay subsidy granted to King Henry VIII in the fifteenth year of his reign to carry on the wars with France and Scotland. The general subsidy listing has been likened a Kelly’s Directory for the year 1523/4, providing local information that is otherwise somewhat scant at this time in history prior to the commencement of parish registers. Cardinal Wolsey had to find a way of gathering in money in order to finance the war with France. In 1522 he ordered a survey disguised as a military muster. Men were supposedly being valued for the ability to provide armour, but in reality it was used to raise money on everyone with goods over £5 and income from land of £1 or more. In the listing below, the tax paid by individuals was based on income from Land, marked (L) or on Wages (W); otherwise the tax was based on Goods. Laundon (Lavendon) in 1524
